Everything you’ve Always Wanted to Know About Beads, but Were too Afraid to Ask (with Julie Grenier)

19 March 2026
Training and education

Join us in person at daphne or online for an evening with Julie Grenier, an Inuk beadwork artist from Kuujjuaq, Nunavik, now based in Montreal, who will share insights into her vibrant beading practice. In this talk, Grenier will discuss the diverse materials she works with—including beads sourced from around the world, as well as ivory and bone—and how experimentation shapes her creative process. She will present examples of her wide-ranging work, from beaded embroidery and appliqué to clothing and canvas pieces. Drawing on skills passed down from her mother and grandmother, Grenier reflects on tradition, spontaneity, and the inspirations behind her internationally recognized beadwork.

Julie Grenier is from Kuujjuaq, a small community in Nunavik, Northern Québec. She currently resides with her family in Notre-Dame-de-l’ile-Perrot, a small community west of Montreal. Julie has been beading and sewing since the age of eight and has taught art to community members. Julie recently collaborated on the design and beading of the outfit worn by Canada’s governor general. One of Julie’s collaborative work is on permanent display at the museum ofor Man in Paris, another one is on display at the Winnipeg art gallery and she has been recognized by the Nunavik Arts Secretariat, by the Avataq cultural institute and by Kativik Ilisarnilirijiit for her work.
