Training and education

Kwe! Bonjour! Hi!

I (Nibisha Sioui, Wendat and a member of the Anicinape community of Pikogan, as well as a lecturer in social work at UQAM and a clinical and community psychologist), together with Shawn-Renée Hordyk and Alexandra Pierre, professors of social work at UQAM, will be co-teaching a master’s-level course on Indigenous perspectives in social work this spring (2026) at the School of Social Work at UQAM.

It will be offered intensively (9:30AM to 4:30PM) on the following dates:

  • April 30 (Thursday)
  • May 1 (Friday)
  • May 2 (Saturday)
  • May 14–15–16 (Thursday, Friday, Saturday)
  • May 28–29 (Thursday and Friday)

This is a course grounded in Indigenous perspectives in social work, emphasizing experiential learning and Indigenous ways of learning. Topics will include cultural safety, strengths, resilience and resistance, Indigenous trauma, and social work intervention in Indigenous contexts. Various workshops will be offered (creative activities, the blanket exercise, etc.), and collaboration with Kahnawake as well as guest speakers who are Indigenous and/or in the field of social work are also planned.

We are aiming for approximately 6–12 participants. We are offering to open the course to 2 Indigenous participants who may or may not hold a bachelor’s degree. In this case, it will be possible to register as independent (non-degree) students. We have also created spaces for individuals who do not have a bachelor’s degree.

Please note that these two spots are offered free of charge and this training will be offered in French. Deadline to apply is April 30th, 2026.
