Infinite Forms / Iah Tshiewató: ktha tsi Nikaieron’tó:tens
“Infinite Forms/ Iah Tshiewató:ktha tsi Nikaieron’tó:tens”, an exhibition featuring Indigenous artists David Garneau (Métis), Alexis Gros-Louis (Wendat), Martin Akwiranoron Loft (Kanien’kehá:ka/Mohawk), and Michelle Sound (Cree and Métis), blends Western tradition and First Nations knowledge.
Through inventive repetition and variation of themes, the exhibition explores past and present interactions between Indigenous peoples and Europeans, providing a unique perspective on the effects of colonialism. In Garneau’s work, the incorporation of books and stones adds depth and symbolism to the works, where Indigenous perspectives and Western materialism intertwine. Loft’s portrait series captures the essence and stories of Indigenous people through photography. Sound’s cyanotypes, on elk hide, speak to a deep connection to the land and ancestral culture. Gros-Louis, meanwhile, delves into Wendat culture, defying colonial erasure to better reclaim and celebrate Indigenous heritage and stories.
