Filmmaker mentor
JOB DESCRIPTION
Wapikoni is an Indigenous organization that promotes the creative expression of Indigenous people, with a focus on respecting narrative sovereignty. For 20 years, its three Mobile Studios have traveled across Quebec and Canada, while a Virtual Creative Studio allows reaching even more members of the communities. These two complementary activities provide training and exploration of audiovisual creation tools. Wapikoni is looking for filmmaker-mentors to accompany Indigenous participants throughout their creative projects, within the context of either of these studios.
Mobile Studio: The mandate is to mentor participants as they create a short film all while transferring knowledge regarding the basics of filmmaking during a 4–5 week creative studio in an Indigenous community. The filmmaker-mentor works in collaboration with another filmmaker-mentor, an outreach worker, a local coordinator and an assistant-filmmaker.
Virtual Studio: The mandate is to provide remote mentorship to participants as they create a creative work all while transferring fundamental knowledge regarding their chosen medium of artistic expression. The virtual cohort gathers six different projects for a six-week creative cycle. The filmmaker-mentor works in close collaboration with an outreach worker and also fosters collaborative connections with members of other teams and with other artists in the cohort.
MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES
- Under the supervision of the creative studio managers, the filmmaker-mentor will:
- Guide participants through their creative process, support their personal growth and foster their skill development
- Foster a positive, healthy and culturally safe environment
- Ensure respect for narrative sovereignty throughout all stages of their project
- Teach and share expertise in creating and directing short films
- Train and provide technical support to participants at every stage of their project
- Develop and lead workshops and exercises tailored to varying skill levels, covering different aspects of filmmaking
- Document the activity and participants’ journeys Act as a representative of the organization
MOBILE STUDIO
- Provide guidance in the creation of 4 to 6 short films
- Promote activities and encourage participation;
- Organize, supervise, and oversee the shooting and editing of projects; Provide technical support for music recordings using Logic Pro X;
- Supervise the assistant filmmaker;
- Be responsible for the equipment (proper use, maintenance, inventory).
VIRTUAL STUDIO
- Guide the participant in producing a creative piece
- Provide mentorship and personalized follow-up;
- Support the development of the participant’s autonomy in preparation for shooting; Foster motivation and engagement among all cohort members;
- Collaborate in weekly follow-up meetings with other team members.
SKILLS
- Hold a degree in filmmaking or equivalent experience
- Have directed at least two short films or equivalent experience
- Have very good technical knowledge in camera, sound recording, editing and scriptwriting Be skilled in Final Cut Pro X and/or Première
- Be proficient in Logic Pro X (an asset)
- Be knowledgeable about Indigenous realities in Quebec and Canada
- Have experience working with Indigenous communities, with youth or abroad (an asset) Teaching skills (knowledge transfer)
- Be a team player
- Have organizational skills, leadership and drive
- Be able to deal with uncertainty, take initiative and creatively solve problems when faced with unexpected situations
- Show great adaptability (cross-cultural reality, remote location, variable hours, etc.) Be able to work under pressure and meet fixed deadlines
- Be fluent in French and/or English (knowledge of an Indigenous language an asset) Driving license and experience required (for the Mobile Studio)

Virtual Studio:
- Remote/virtual
WORKING CONDITIONS
Mobile Studio:
Full-time contract lasting 4 to 5 weeks, primarily between May and October 2025.
Virtual Studio:
- Contract of up to 75 hours, over 8 weeks; virtual cohorts are held a few times a year, between August and March.
