Job title: Volunteer and Community Involvement Officer
Reports to: Program Manager
Type of contract: Temporary full-time contract until December 31, 2025, with possibility of renewed hours
Schedule: 35 hours per week; flexible hours, generally Monday to Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Compensation and benefits

  • Group insurance coverage after 3 months’ employment
  • 3 weeks paid vacation per year (4% vacation pay + 1 additional week)
  • 10 paid or personal sick days per year
  • Salary: $23.95 – $28.18/hour

Position objective

Reporting to the Program Manager, the Volunteer and Community Engagement Officer is responsible for positioning PAQ as an active, engaged and valued community partner within Montreal’s broader Indigenous community. The agent is responsible for leading the development and implementation of an Indigenous-focused internship program and a dynamic volunteer engagement strategy. In addition, they coordinate key community events that reflect PAQ’s mission and commitment to Indigenous culture and inclusion.

Main responsibilities

1. Community engagement – Montreal’s Indigenous communities

  • Collaborate with the program team to strengthen relationships with Montreal’s Indigenous communities and Indigenous-serving organizations.
  • Promote information exchange and encourage participation of Indigenous communities in PAQ meetings, events and celebrations.
  • Organize monthly anniversary celebrations at PAQ 1 and PAQ 2, including food, activities, publicity and decorations.
  • Organize events such as National Indigenous Peoples’ Day, National Volunteer Week, Neighbours’ Day, CLES events, clinics and others as required.
  • Mobilize a group of volunteers for each of our events, and follow up rigorously before and after the event.
  • Maintain an up-to-date directory of indigenous organizations in the Greater Montreal area.

2. Internship program development

  • Lead the development of an internship program that provides meaningful work experience and pathways to employment at PAQ.
  • Establish partnerships with educational institutions such as Cégep du Vieux Montréal, Collège Maisonneuve, Cégep Marie-Victorin, Université de Montréal, McGill University, Concordia University, Kiuna Institute and more.
  • Coordinate internship logistics with the Program Manager and Human Resources, including integration, training, scheduling, supervision and performance monitoring.
  • Facilitate intern recognition initiatives and maintain an accurate database of participants.
  • Provide support and guidance to interns, particularly Indigenous interns seeking long-term employment with PAQ.

3. Volunteer program coordination

  • In consultation with staff from all departments, determine volunteer needs and establish clear roles and responsibilities.
  • Partner with the Volunteer Bureau of Montreal and forensic community service programs (e.g., YMCA, Sécurité publique du Québec) to recruit a diverse pool of volunteers.
  • Broaden the volunteer base to include members of Indigenous communities who do not currently have access to PAQ services.
  • Advertise externally with the support of the Director of Communications and Marketing and the Program Manager to recruit volunteers.
  • Establish and maintain a comprehensive volunteer management system (recruitment, integration, agreements, scheduling, time tracking, recognition, training materials).
  • Develop and regularly update volunteer resources, including onboarding PowerPoints, posters and the Volunteer Guide.
  • Provide ongoing support to volunteers and ensure they are meaningfully integrated into the organization.
  • Maintain a volunteer database in collaboration with the Program Manager.
  • Organize Volunteer Week celebrations in collaboration with your direct supervisor.

4. Donation management

  • Oversee the coordination of clothing donations at all PAQ sites.
  • Wash, sort and fold items received.
  • Ensure proper delivery, sorting and distribution of clothing to all sites.
  • Develop and maintain intake packages for new participants (including resource lists and educational materials).
  • Ensure sufficient emergency clothing at both sites, and proactively order as needed.
  • Organize monthly distribution of admission kit.
  • Ensure that data relating to all the above activities is accurately recorded and reported in a standardized statistical Excel format.

Other Tasks

  • Assume other responsibilities as assigned by the Program Manager to support the mission and delivery of PAQ services.

Qualifications and experience

  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in partnership development, communications or project coordination, ideally in the non-profit or community sector.
  • Post-secondary education (college diploma or university degree) or equivalent work experience.
  • Strong facilitation, mediation and group facilitation skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in French, intermediate in English; an Indigenous language is a strong asset.
  • Proven experience working in or with Indigenous communities or in homeless services is highly desirable.
  • Demonstrated ability to build relationships with various stakeholders, including community partners and educational institutions.
  • Skills in project planning, time management, problem solving and meeting deadlines.
  • Experience in database management and information systems.

Additional requirements

  • Occasional evening and weekend availability may be required to support events and programming.

*At PAQ, although French is the main working language, many of the Indigenous beneficiaries we serve speak their first language and English as a second, French being rarely used. In order to provide effective support, fluency in English is required for this position. This requirement is based solely on the nature of the duties and the need to communicate effectively with our beneficiaries, in compliance with Quebec language laws.
