Decolonizing Understandings of Neurodiversity

03 December 2025
Events

McGill University will mark the United Nations’ International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) on December 3rd, a global observance dedicated to advancing the rights, visibility, and full participation of persons with disabilities.

First proclaimed by the UN in 1992, IDPD is an opportunity for institutions and communities worldwide to recommit to accessibility and inclusion. At McGill, this day affirms our ongoing work to create a campus where all members of our community can thrive.

This year, the Equity Team in Office of the Provost and Executive Vice-President (Academic) is honoured to welcome Dr. Grant Bruno, nêhiyaw (Plains Cree) and a member of the Samson Cree Nation, whose research and community work centre on culturally grounded, decolonized approaches to child and youth health. Dr. Bruno—an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Alberta and the parent of an autistic child—will deliver a session titled Decolonizing Understandings of Neurodiversity: Indigenous Knowledge Systems and the Restoration of Belonging, where he explores how nêhiyaw knowledge systems and community-led practices can reshape mainstream autism discourse and strengthen support for Indigenous families.

Please note this event will be preceded by a catered reception. The event location (Armstrong Building, 3420, McTavish) is accessible, and offers sign language interpretation and live captioning. Childcare is also available to registrants.
