Employment Type: Part-time, permanent
Schedule: Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Location: PAQ 2 – 2060 Saint Dominique Street, Montreal, QC, H2X 2X1

Organization Overview

PAQ is an Indigenous organization that supports First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples facing housing insecurity in Tio’tià:ke / Montreal. Through a culturally appropriate approach rooted in empowerment and harm reduction, we provide shelter, housing options, and services that promote well-being, healing, and community building. We work in partnership to advocate for the health and housing rights of Indigenous peoples in urban settings.

Job Objectives:

Under the supervision of the Services Coordinator, the staff member is responsible for welcoming, assisting, and supporting Indigenous men and women in need who are seeking housing at Projets Autochtones du Québec (PAQ). By fostering a safe, inclusive, and respectful environment, the staff member works with residents based on their needs, while contributing to community life and ensuring the smooth operation of the services provided. This position requires an approach centered on empathy, collaboration, and interventions tailored to Indigenous realities.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Welcomes and admits Indigenous men and women in need who are seeking housing at Projets Autochtones du Québec;
Provides support and assistance tailored to residents’ needs;
Fosters group dynamics and a sense of community among residents;
Maintains the stability, safety, and cleanliness of the premises and ensures compliance with PAQ regulations;
Serves meals and ensures the smooth operation of the community room;
Intervenes in crisis or emergency situations and responds to residents’ needs in accordance with PAQ procedures and services;
Completes relevant documents, statistics, and reports;
Coordinates residents’ completion of household chores to ensure the premises remain clean, while also completing any essential tasks that have not been done to guarantee cleanliness;
Participates in team meetings and training sessions;
Offers schedule flexibility and availability to cover substitute shifts;
Performs any other tasks assigned by the Coordinator or Team Leader, as needed

Demonstrates an understanding of and commitment to reconciliation with Indigenous peoples of Canada;
Enjoys meeting people from different backgrounds and traditions and building meaningful relationships with them;
Personal qualities of integrity and resilience;
Energetic and motivated, with a positive attitude.

Knowledge, Skills, and Experience:

At least six months of experience in the field of intervention, social work, or other similar fields related to counseling;
Experience living or working with Indigenous communities or individuals;
Bilingualism (French and functional English); knowledge of Indigenous languages is an asset;
Education: College studies (minimum);
Empathy;
Initiative in problem-solving;
Professional ethics;
Ability to work as part of a team;
First aid certification is an asset.

*At PAQ, although French is the primary working language, many of the Indigenous clients we serve speak their mother tongue first and English as a second language, with French rarely being used. In order to provide effective support, proficiency in English is required for this position. This requirement is based solely on the nature of the duties and the need to communicate effectively with our clients, in accordance with Quebec’s language laws.
