A project of the Native Women’s Shelter of Montreal, Miyoskamin is an innovative center and second-stage housing complex that provides comprehensive health care, social services, and access to justice services for Indigenous women, youth, and families.



We are currently looking for a Building Maintenance Manager who will be responsible for performing a wide variety of tasks relating to the building cleaning and upkeep. Specifically, the Maintenance Worker is responsible for safety, sanitation, and general upkeep of common areas and will provide support when it comes to maintaining safe and functional living conditions in all 23 dwellings.

 

POSITION TITLE : Building Maintenance Manager

TYPE OF POSITION: Full time

LOCATION : 757 rue des Seigneurs, Montréal QC

SALARY : $28 – $30/hr, paid biweekly

SCHEDULE : 40 hours per week, Monday – Friday

START DATE : April – May 2024

PROBATION : Three (3) month probation period, after which an evaluation will be conducted.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Technical Maintenance:

  • Maintain buildings ventilation systems and conduct monthly, quarterly, and annual cleaning and inspections of all vents, both inside and outside.
  • Maintain the building’s electrical systems and provide support to hired electricians as needed.
  • Maintain the building’s plumbing and sprinkler system and assist hired technicians in semi-annual, annual, and periodic inspections.
  • Maintain and service buildings fire alarm, smoke detector, and sprinkler systems and scheduling annual inspections and fire drills.
  • Acting as a resource for technical maintenance support with housing residents.
  • Supporting the creation of resource manuals and instructions for best practices and solutions to common problems for housing residents.
  • Recognizing and identifying when professional service providers need to be brought in to maintain the safe and effective functioning of building systems, equipment, or machinery.
  • Acting as a liaison for service providers conducting regular maintenance on building equipment and machinery (elevator technician, safety inspectors, etc).
  • Painting and plastering repairs as needed in all apartments.
  • Minor renovations and updates as needed between resident transitions and moves.
  • Re-painting as needed after repairs.
  • Providing recommendations to the Director of Miyoskamin, as needed.

 

Building Management :

  • Coordinating with contracted services to maintain technical systems in the building
  • Negotiating and selecting service providers and presenting options to the Director, Miyoskamin
  • Being on site point of contact for technical service providers
  • Managing building storage and off-site storage unit
  • Overseeing contract work when applicable, ensuring work is done well and in accordance with the agreed upon specifications
  • Being on call, responding to building related emergencies when applicable (specifically related to risk of water or fire damage)
  • Managing off site storage unit, keeping inventory and organizing space
  • Driving company vehicle when needed to pick up items necessary for building operations

Upkeep, cleaning & Waste Management

  • Fixing and replacing any broken, damaged, or depleted items in common areas and office areas (burnt light bulbs, leaking faucets, broken door knobs, empty dispensers).
  • Installing items in and around the building (office items, building office furniture when necessary)
  • Addressing pest, vermin, or infestation problems and promoting prevention practices in general
  • Recognizing and identifying any hygiene or safety hazards and alerting the Director of Miyoskamin when necessary
  • Watering outdoor plants and trees.
  • Cleaning the building’s exterior, terrasse, and courtyard when necessary.
  • Periodically accessing the roof for maintenance.
  • Ensuring safe and clear access to the building throughout seasons (i.e. shovelling in winter, and maintaining grass and shrubs in summer).

 

Peer Support and Participation:

  • Attending and participating in biweekly staff meetings
  • Embracing a collaborative and respectful environment amongst peers
  • Oversee and support full time and part time Overnight Caretakers, with support from Director of Miyoskamin
  • Embodying the mission and values of the NWSM and Miyoskamin

 

Qualifications:

  • Ability to act with discretion and ensure confidentiality.
  • Ability to carry and lift heavy objects, stand for long periods of time, and climb heights.
  • Bilingual – French and English (required).

 

Education & Experience:

  • High School diploma and experience in a related field (janitorial work, custodian, maintenance worker, etc.)
  • Valid license & safe driving record (required).
  • Experience working in a housing complex (asset).
  • Interest and/or experience in plumbing, electrical work, minor construction (asset).
  • Experience working with Indigenous communities (asset).
