Kanehsatake: 270 Years of Resistance… and it continues
From the barricades of Kanehsatake to present-day issues: understanding land struggles today

The Cercle des Premières Nations de l’UQAM, in collaboration with AFESPED and the Comité contre l’empire, invites you to a screening and discussion of the film Kanehsatake: 270 Years of Resistance, directed by Alanis Obomsawin.

April 9, 2026, 6:30 PM

400 Sainte-Catherine Street East
Café Aquin, Room A-2030, 2nd Floor, UQAM

This landmark film retraces the events of the Siege of Kanehsatake, also known as the so-called “Oka Crisis” in 1990, and highlights the resistance of the Kanien’kehá:ka people in the face of territorial dispossession. The screening will be followed by a discussion aimed at drawing connections between these historical events and contemporary land struggles.

The discussion will be facilitated by Marie-Kristine Petiquay, political science student, Atikamekw filmmaker and lecturer in Indigenous cinema, alongside Sevghi Haidar (Crimean Tatar of the Black Sea), a member of the Front de Résistance Autochtone Populaire (FRAP), who will offer a current and activist perspective on these issues.

Please note: the film and the discussion will be held in French.

Free admission! No reservation required! Open to all!
