Kitchen Assistant
Work Location: PAQ 1 – 169 Rue de la Gauchtière East
Immediate Supervisor: Facilities and Operations Manager
Schedule: Wednesday through Sunday, 3:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Organization Overview

PAQ is an Indigenous organization that supports First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples facing housing insecurity in Tio’tià:ke / Montreal. Through a culturally appropriate approach rooted in empowerment and harm reduction, we provide shelter, housing options, and services that promote well-being, healing, and community building. We work in partnership to advocate for the health and housing rights of Indigenous peoples in urban settings.

What You’ll Do

The Kitchen Assistant is responsible for assisting the cooks in providing nutritious meals to members of the PAQ community by helping to prepare and serve meals that are nutritious, safe, and culturally appropriate. The Kitchen Assistant contributes to the smooth daily operation of the kitchen by performing preparation, cleaning, and logistical support tasks, in accordance with PAQ’s hygiene standards and values.

Main Responsibilities

Assist the cook in preparing meals (preparing ingredients, assembling dishes, portioning).

Clean and disinfect work surfaces, equipment, and kitchen areas.

Wash, put away, and maintain utensils, dishes, and equipment.

Help with receiving, labeling, and storing food and supplies.

Strictly adhere to food hygiene and safety standards.

Help keep the kitchen clean, organized, and safe at all times.

Work with the team to ensure smooth and respectful food service.

Required Skills and Experience

Experience in a kitchen, food service, or institutional setting is a plus.
Willingness to learn and ability to follow instructions.
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
Reliability, punctuality, and a team spirit.

Language Requirements

Fluency in French is required.
Fluency in English is required.
Knowledge of an Indigenous language is an asset.
This language requirement is related to the nature of the duties and the population served, in accordance with Quebec’s language laws.

*At PAQ, although French is the primary working language, many of the Indigenous clients we serve speak their mother tongue first and English as a second language, with French rarely being used.
