The culture, spirituality, and ancestral practices of Indigenous peoples have long been ignored, discriminated against, and sometimes even criminalized. Recently, however, they have made a strong comeback. At the same time, the general public is discovering them and eager to learn more. Among these practices, one stands out for its cultural richness, spiritual significance, importance to communities, and beauty: the Pow Wow! A Pow Wow is an annual summer gathering where members of a community welcome dancers and drummers from other communities. Over the course of a weekend, people dance and sing together. The activity offered by CPNUQAM aims to demystify what Pow Wows are all about.

Our event consists of two parts: first, there will be a demonstration of Pow Wow dances, including an introduction to social dances and dances open to the public at Pow Wows, as well as an explanation of the different styles of Pow Wow dances, particularly the hoop dance.

The second part will be a discussion about what Pow Wows are generally like. The public often has questions about this event: Am I allowed to attend? What should I expect? etc. There will be a Q&A session with the audience to answer any questions you may have! We chose late spring for this event so that people planning to attend Pow Wows this season will know what to expect and can make the most of their experience!

This Dance demonstration and sharing will be presented by Marie-Céline Einish.

Marie-Celine Einish is an Indigenous actress, dancer, artist and storyteller from the Naskapi Nation of Kawawachikamach. She has performed locally, nationally and internationally to showcase powwow dancing including jingle, fancy shawl and hoop, as well as storytelling theatre, along side many world-class artists. Having graduated from Theatre Arts at Algonquin College, her passion for storytelling has also lead to a career in communications and public relations in a variety of Indigenous organizations, but continues to celebrate her cultural identity and expression by staying true to the spirit of dance and continuing to carry and share traditional dances with a contemporary twist, bridging together her cultural teachings and expression.

Free admission! No reservation required! Open to everyone!
