SEEKING LEAD ARTIST

CBC Indigenous Languages Installation CBC Montreal is seeking a lead artist for a mobile pop-up installation that brings Indigenous languages and stories from CBC’s 80-year archive into public space. This is a paid position starting immediately, through CBC’s Reconciliation Fund, led by the Indigenous Office and Accessibility department. The project runs through winter 2027. This accessibility-first project brings Indigenous language revitalization into everyday Montreal life. We’re opening CBC’s archive to release stories that center Indigenous voices, giving these languages a living, physical presence in the city. The installation becomes a permanent asset of the Indigenous Office, with territory-specific stories refreshed for years to come.

The Work:

As lead artist and co-project manager, you’ll shape the visual, sound, and narrative direction of the installation. Together we’ll develop the curatorial frame: What story are we telling? Are we centering Indigenous voices within CBC’s coverage of Indigenous history? Surfacing local storytelling traditions? There’s rich creative territory in the soundscapes, A/V design, translations, and how the archival stories are told. Accessibility itself is a creative practice here. Braille, haptic triggers, high-contrast visuals, and simplified transcriptions could all shape how the narrative lands. You’ll help identify and connect with Elders and knowledge keepers, working with them to develop the narrative and secure their approval on story direction. The exterior design of the unit will work within CBC brand guidelines, with plenty of creative room inside those lines.

What We’re Looking For:

• Indigenous artist, or someone with existing community relationships and genuine allyship
• Strong practice in audio/video/media art (sound design valued)
• Knowledge of accessible design principles
• Curatorial or conceptual thinking
• Strong project and time management skills
