Still Here! Indigenous Voices in Montreal
This exhibition is a collective work highlighting various stages of which several people were involved. It is a knowledge mobilization tool resulting from two participatory research projects carried out with members of the Montreal/Tiohtiá:ke Indigenous community and a team from the Institut National de la Recherche Scientifique (INRS) between 2019 and 2023.
The first research, which focused on relations between Indigenous and non-Indigenous in the city’s public spaces, brought together eight people in a series of sharing circles based on the photovoix method and resulted in an exhibition presented as part of the Présence Autochtone international festival in summer 2021. The second process brought together 18 young people from the community (aged 18 to 35) around participatory cartography, and resulted in the online publication of an interactive narrative map.
The design of the exhibition at the MEM brought together seven people from one or other of these two projects. The approach used was based on the transmission of individual stories, as well as on discussions supporting a collective analysis of the issues raised. The aim of this research was to deepen our knowledge of Indigenous people’s relationships with and within the city, and to help make their presence and experience of urban spaces more visible.
This project was carried out within the framework of the Entente sur le Développement Culturel de Montréal.
