For centuries, settler researchers have been interested in the unique aspects of Indigenous life in Kanata. Guided by non-Indigenous research methods and colonial biases, research activities have rarely benefited the Indigenous communities consulted and, in many ways, have instead been detrimental to them. Several institutions and organizations are now working and advocating for increased Indigenous governance of research. This governance aims, among other things, at the well-being of individuals and communities, at the recognition of Indigenous expertise and at the rights to Indigenous data.
