For centuries, settler researchers have been interested in the unique aspects of Indigenous life in Kanata. Guided by non-Indigenous research methods and colonial biases, research activities have rarely benefited the Indigenous communities consulted and, in many ways, have instead been detrimental to them. Several institutions and organizations are now working and advocating for increased Indigenous governance of research. This governance aims, among other things, at the well-being of individuals and communities, at the recognition of Indigenous expertise and at the rights to Indigenous data.

With this in mind, before completing the consultation request form, we strongly encourage non-Indigenous researchers to: 

• Ensure you understand historic and current Indigenous realities. To start your self-education journey, consult our awareness tools.
• Familiarize yourself with Indigenous research ethics principals such as The First Nations Principles of OCAP and the National Inuit Strategy on Research (ITK)

Finally, please take into considerations that, like many other Indigenous organizations, the NETWORK is at full capacity. As it is crucial for our team to prioritize community needs, your consultation request might not be selected or remain unanswered.
