A Guide To Indigenous Cultural Awareness

01 October 2016
Awareness

Despite the sense of attachment that Indigenous peoples have for Tiohtià:ke/Montreal, a major national commission, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC), concluded that the lack of knowledge about Indigenous peoples in Kanata leads to misunderstanding. Other research has shown that Montrealers are the least informed about Indigenous peoples in their city compared to other major cities in Kanata.

Indigenous women are facing a national crisis of violence, disappearances and murders that requires sensitivity and action on the part of police. Across Kanata, Indigenous people are over-represented in correctional facilities and it is important to understand the historical context and systemic causes of incarceration, crime and victimization that have implications for policing. Indigenous peoples are also over-represented in terms of homelessness and police profiling. It is important for SPVM employees to be aware of Indigenous realities and how best to work together.
