3 positions to fill on the Indigenous Advisory Committee

23 April 2024
Volunteering
Parc Jean-Drapeau is the largest insular park in Montréal and celebrates its 150th anniversary this year. The Parc’s staff is proud to carry out a series of strategic initiatives aimed at achieving its ecological transition, highlighting its rich heritage and creating exciting and enlightening experiences for its public. In doing so, it is leaning on an open governance that encourages involvement and collaboration.

This has been ongoing with the Indigenous communities over the last five years, thanks notably to a committee composed of Société du parc Jean-Drapeau (SPJD) members and people representing the various First Nations in Montréal.

Are you interested in joining an Indigenous Advisory Committee?

You have until May 1, 2024 to submit your application.

Background

The land on which the park is located – set in the Saint Lawrence River in the heart of the Hochelaga archipelago and facing Tiohtiá:ke – are part of Indigenous ancestral territories. The SPJD has followed up on the City of Montréal’s commitment to truth and reconciliation by inscribing it into its strategic framework and making it an organizational priority. This resulted in a reconciliation action plan, which in turn led to the conducting of many major initiatives, including the creation of an Indigenous Advisory Committee, writing an Indigenous design Strategy, hiring Indigenous specialists and opening up dialogues with the communities in the Montréal area.

What is the role of this position?

The advisory committee comprised of Indigenous and Non-Indigenous people collaborates with the SPJD in implementing its commitment to reconciliation. It addresses, discusses, and contributes through its advice and recommendations to enlightened decisions taken by the SPJD on Indigenous issues.

Accompany the Parc in its comprehensive and overall efforts in terms of truth and reconciliation.

Help in creating a close relationship with community stakeholders.

Revise and provide input into project proposals that pertain to Indigenous issues.

Follow and provide advice in the implementing of the reconciliation action plan and the Indigenous design Strategy.

The Indigenous Advisory Committee meets in person about three times a year, on average. Special virtual meetings may be added, if needed.

What are the profiles we are seeking?

In addition to individual abilities, committee members must collectively bring together a combination of skills and experience which, in synergy, enable the committee to efficiently carry out their duties. Thus, we are seeking people from the community and/or people who have skills and abilities in the following areas, to complement and enhance our advisory committee:

  • Issues and relations with the urban Indigenous communities
  • Business and partnership development with the Indigenous organizations and specialists
  • Architecture, landscape heritage
  • Arts and culture
  • Sports tourism and recreation

We recognize the importance of diversity and representativeness in the committee, and we are striving to include in our committee Indigenous people who are mainly from various nations and communities, as well as people of Inuit origin. In this spirit, we also strongly encourage applications from young adults aged 40 and under.

To join our committee and contribute to the realization of the Parc’s mission, please express your interest to Jonathan Cha, team leader of planning and conservation, at jcha@parcjeandrapeau.com or 514-872-6120.
