Finding employment can be a challenging journey, especially for Indigenous individuals who bring with them a diverse range of experiences, cultural backgrounds, and unique tories. Navigating the job market often involves overcoming barriers such as discrimination, lack of access to resources, and the need for culturally relevant support. In order to help the Indigenous community connect with employment opportunities, we have gathered a list of services to help them build on their strengths and discover paths that align with their aspirations.

Employment assistance services

Montreal Service Center
A program by the First Nations Human Resources Development Commission of Quebec (FNHRDCQ)

The employment and training service center offers support in finding employment, returning to school and starting a business for registered Indigenous individuals who have been in Montreal for more than 30 days.

Ivirtivik
A program by the Kativik Regional Government

The program is an employment preparation project that welcomes Inuit participants in the greater Montreal area, with the aim of helping them enter the job market or return to school. Services are offered free of charge to participants in English, French and Inuktitut. The program lasts an average of six months, with 30 hours per week.

The Roundhouse Café – Tier 2
A program by L’Itinéraire

Tier 2 of the Roundhouse Café program is a 20-week work integration program. Participants learn the barista trade and can work up to 35 hours a week at minimum wage. The program supports participants in acquiring skills and offers employability workshops (CV writing, interviewing, etc.).

Occasional work opportunities

Sujuuq? Podcast
A program by Saturviit Inuit Women’s Association of Nunavik

Sujuuq (What?) podcast is an opportunity for Inuit to express their personal experiences. Topics cover many aspects of Inuit life, including Inuit culture, religion, education and more. Participants are paid to share their expertise.

The Roundhouse Café – Tier 1
A program by L’Itinéraire

Tier 1 of the Roundhouse Café program offers shifts paid in cash, at minimum wage, paid by the day. Participants also receive a free meal. Support for study and employment is also offered.

Street Workers for First Nations, Inuit and Métis Community Members
A program by Plein Milieu

Street workers meet people where they are: on the streets and alleyways, in parks, subways, apartments and organizations. Street workers offer listening, support, advice, referrals and accompaniment on a voluntary and confidential basis to people in need. Staff on site is also available to give a hand with job searching.

Indigenous Housing Program
A program by Chez Doris

This program helps Indigenous women who are homeless and/or living in shelters by referring them to a social worker to help them find permanent housing, ensure housing stability and meet other challenges. One of the program’s objectives is to ensure that each participant has better economic or employment opportunities.

A program by the Women’s Centre of Montréal

The Indigenous women program entitled “on the road to wellness” aims to support and guide Indigenous women living in urban areas with services adapted to their values ​​and momentum. Job searching is also part of their service offer.
